Otselic’s Messineo to face opposition in November election
OTSELIC – The political landscape in Otselic could be shaken up a bit in the November elections as new candidates for supervisor, council and justice have entered the race.
Evan T. Williams, a Republican, was nominated at the Republican caucus to run against incumbent Supervisor David J. Messineo, a Democrat.
Town of Otselic Justice Hugh H. Comfort, a Republican, has decided to enter the race for two open positions on the council. He will join the ballot with incumbents Jay C. Graham, Louis Perry and William F. Waltz, all Democrats.
Three candidates for justice are: Republican Charles E. Seward, who was endorsed by his party and also filed a independent petition, Daryel M. Jensen, also a Republican, who got the nod from the Democrats, and independent Kelly Moyer.
Williams is a 55-year old retired conservationalist who worked for the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation at Pharsalia and Georgetown minimum security camps for 29 years. He was also a board member of the Otselic Valley Central School District for five years.
Williams is not running on any particular platform, but said he has spoken to struggling dairy farmers in Smyrna who hope natural gas drilling - if done safely - can augment their income.
“I know we have the possibility of problems like they did in Pennsylvania, but I do believe that if we monitor our wonderful aquifer and how they do the drilling, we can do it safety,” he said.
Williams said he was ready “to shake the bush” for supporters.
“This town is in pretty good shape. It’s just time for the people to have another choice this time around,” he said.
Messineo has been supervisor since 2004.
