Greene wears down Chenango Forks

CHENANGO FORKS – Victories over Chenango Forks have come few and far between the past 11 years, especially by Section IV teams. Monday afternoon, Greene halted the Blue Devils’ intradivisional dominance, and picked up their first win over Forks in 28 years.
The Trojans forced four Chenango Forks turnovers, and halted three Devils drives inside the 25 in a 21-0 shutout.
Using a running-back-by-commitee approach, the Trojans rushed for 177 yards, while quarterback Joe Beckwith was ultra efficient completing all three of his passes for 64 yards and one touchdown.
The offensive line of Isaiah Webb, Garrett Huttleston, Chris Kehoe, Trevor Flohr, and Dan Haskell slowly wore the Chenango Forks defense down, and yards began to come in bigger chunks through the final two periods as the Devils suffered their first division loss since 2000. “The nice thing is that our five offensive linemen only play on offense, and we rotate in three defensive tackles,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “I think that really keeps our guys fresh. Four quarters is a long game, and they had a lot of guys going both ways. That was the big difference.”
This year’s Chenango Forks club may not be as dominant as past year’s clubs, but it certainly is no pushover. Greene found that out in the first half accumulating just 72 yards of total offense.
It was, however, a big-time defensive play by Webb that swung the momentum toward Greene early. Forks moved the ball for a first down on its opening possession quickly moving into the Trojans’ territory. On a third-down play, Webb hit Forks quarterback Zach Jeske on his option pitch creating a loose ball. Ricky Carbone recovered for Greene at the Blue Devils’ 36.
It didn’t appear Greene would take advantage of the field position. Following a first-down-run by Keegan Cerwinski, Beckwith fumbled a snap for an 11-yard loss, and Beckwith suffered a three-yard loss on the next play. On third-and-long, Beckwith rolled to his left toward his team’s sideline. He made an off-balance throw to Cole Browning, who outjumped the Forks defender to complete a 35-yard play. Two plays later, Greene’s Dan Dickman crossed the goal on a two-yard run.
Later in the first quarter, Forks was on the move toward the tying score. Jeske found success with a trio of option keepers, and Ethan Cook had a nice first-down run. Greene’s defense tightened, and a third-down pass on the final play of the opening stanza was intercepted by Jeff Carlin.
Yesterday’s win was a 180-degree turn in circumstance for Greene, who suffered numerous turnovers in last year’s loss to Chenango Forks. “We had way too many turnovers last season, and it was a point of emphasis this year for us to take care of the ball,” Paske said.
Chenango Forks’ third turnover of the game, another fumble on the option, helped Greene gain some breathing room shortly into the second half. On and fourth-down pass, Beckwith fired a strike to Browning in the endzone, who hung on despite tight coverage.
Early in the fourth, Greene sustained its longest drive of the game. Mike Beckwith broke multiple tackles on his way to a 25-yard run. Keegan Cerwinski, who had the fumble recovery that led to the second score, added a pair of tough inside runs, and Carlin dashed around the left side untouched for 15 yards and the third TD of the game.
Jeske led Forks down the field in an attempt to thwart a Greene shutout, but an ill-placed screen pass was intercepted by Dickman to end the threat. “We knew that when Forks was in tight ballgames, they would go to the air,” Paske said. “We told our DBs (defensive backs) to stay back and read the pass. And they did that.”
The victory ends a chaotic week for Greene in which it went several days without a practice due to pervasive flooding and school cancellations across the Southern Tier. “We went three days without practice, and it was pretty ugly on Saturday,” Paske said of practice. “The guys were a little lethargic, but Sunday was better, the guys were focused, and we came out and did it today.”
