Coventry supervisor defeated in GOP primary
COVENTRY – The Republican Party turned away from Coventry Supervisor John M. Phelan Jr. Tuesday and instead chose George L. Westcott to be their candidate in the November elections.
The unofficial tally has Westcott with 161 votes to Phelan’s 56. There are some absentee votes yet to come in over the next couple of days.
The win for Westcott means Phelan will not appear on the ballot at all, as his petition to run as an independent was invalid. The one-term supervisor was elected in the last election after a record-setting turnout at the polls. Phelan won over the incumbent Janice A. O’Shea, 323 to 193.
In that election year’s primary, O’Shea lost the support of the Republican Party to Phelan by just 40 votes. She was forced to run for re-election as a Democrat and an independent.
O’Shea had retained her seat since 2004 when she was elected to her late husband Donal G. O’Shea’s seat on the Chenango County Board of Supervisors. He had represented Coventry in Chenango County government since 2000.
Phelan, who could not be reached for comment this morning, was previously Coventry’s supervisor and one-time chairman of the Chenango County Finance Committee for seven years in the 1990s.
Also in Coventry, the GOP elected Theresa A. Schultheis, the incumbent, to be their candidate for clerk. Schultheis won by 159 votes to Lori L. Ball’s 57. For Coventry Town Council, Thomas A. Sisk and Gwendolyn M. Hinman will be the candidates for two open seats. Hinman received 130 votes; Sisk, 108; and Patricia D. Fiske, 86.
Chenango County Board of Elections Commissioner counted and reported the votes last evening via the telephone due to an Internet glitch. Commissioner Carol Franklin said the problem, which was fixed this morning, had nothing to do with the new voting machines.
Westcott will face challenger Independence Party representative Larry G. Clark in the election Nov. 8.
In other primaries held Tuesday, Kevin D. Cross is the GOP’s candidate for highway superintendent in the Town of Columbus. Cross took 55 votes to Ricky E. Davis’ 5.
Deborah L. Thomas won 309 votes to Colette C. Sands 191 for clerk of the Town of Greene board.
In a tight race in Guilford, Michael G. Miles with 46 votes and Christina M. Townsend’s with 38 votes were selected to be the Republican Party’s representatives for two open council seats. Rosemary J. Thomas’ received 33.
In McDonough, for highway superintendent, Ralph H. Sickler won over Brandon L. Wall, 39 to 21.
In New Berlin, for town justice, Joseph G. Brillinger, Jr. took 47 votes to Lisa J. Harvey’s 2.
For Smithville Supervisor, Fred J. Heisler Jr. took 51 votes to Roger J. Connelly’s 17.
