Cyclones' C team stops Utica
NORWICH – The Cyclones’ “C” team stopped the Utica Bulldogs 19-0 at Alumni Field in Norwich, Sunday in Pop Warner play.
The Cyclones controlled the clock with tough defense and a ball-control offense that created a 31-9 time of possession advantage. Drew Walsh scored from the six yards out on the opening 55-yard, seven-minute drive. A Tom Parrella pass to JT Vinal was good for the point-after touchdown (P.A.T.). Walsh also added a five-yard TD in the third. Elijah Rodriguez also had a five-yard touchdown in the second stanza giving
Austin Foulds, Zack Mills, and Collin Montgomery had good yardage toting the pigskin also. The stiff Cyclone D was led by JT Vinal, Drew Walsh, Keegan Wright, Griffin Clipston, Tom Parrella, with Bulldog fumble recoveries by Scott Manwarren, Noah Marvin and Brandon Huestis.
In a battle of the league’s two best teams, the Cyclones’ “A” team fell to Utica, 13-6.
The game was a defensive struggle, with Utica held in check by the Cyclones’ defense along with many penalties – sometimes two on a play.
Utica had two key plays – a 70-yard open-field gem, and a long return of an intercepted Cyclone pass. The Cyclones had an atypical four turnovers - three fumbles and the interception.
The Cyclones lone score came on a three-yard, touchdown in the fourth by Cameron Edwards. The Cyclone backs had to fight for every yard against the speedy “dogs.” The Cyclone longest gain was a 20-yard pass from Jordan Vinal to Carlos Ithier.
Dan Zieno, Matt Parrella, Itheir, Nick Murphy, Vinal, Trey Muserallo, and Carter Hubbard played hard-nosed defense
The Cyclones “D” team played well in a non-scoring, controlled scrimmage against the Bulldogs, while yhe Cyclones’ “B” team was not in action as Central Square chose not to travel to Norwich, and Utica dropped it B team squad.
The complicated Cyclone schedule continues Saturday, Sept. 17 with all teams on the road. The A team plays Canastota at 1 p.m.; while the D, C, and B teams play at Oneida at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m. respectively.
Also last Sunday, the Cyclones honored those who fell on 9/11 on the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. All Cyclone players wore a patch on their helmets remembering the sad event in our history.
The Norwich Fire Department brought its hook and ladder truck and displayed its largest flag over the north goal post before each game as America, and those of us in Norwich, remembered the tragedy with a moment of silence following the conclusion of the National Anthem.
