Norwich swimmers top Greene for third win

Girls’ Swimming

Norwich 90, Greene 74
NORWICH – Norwich clinched its third victory in four meets with three events to go in Tuesday night’s non-league contest with local rival Greene.
The Tornado, despite limited practice time the past two weeks, put together several outstanding performances in winning seven of the first nine events. The Tornado swam strictly exhibition over the final three races. “We were able to get a good lead, and our girls fought for every point,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey. “I have more swimmers this year that are coming in second and third. The younger girls coming through have a lot of potential, and that is making a big difference.”
Kerstin Franklin had a pair of early wins taking the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Erin Gawronski captured two events, the 200 individual medley and 500 free, and Morgan Hagenbuch won the diving with a season-best 137.20.
Greene’s Jennifer Yeager provided her team with wins in the 200 freestyle, while adding the 100 free to her day’s effort. Jessie Brooks and Erica Bentley picked up individual wins for the Trojans, too.
Norwich’s Friday meet with Maine-Endwell was postponed to a later date. The Tornado are idle until next Thursday when they host Oneonta.

Greene 5, Vestal 0
GREENE – Already leading 2-0 at halftime, Greene picked up the pace in the second half to win going away Tuesday night for its fourth win this season.
Jahna Driscoll scored her team’s first four goals, and Brandee Schoonmaker, making her first appearance this season, tacked on the fifth goal with four minutes remaining in the game.
“I thought Vestal was tough, but we played very steady tonight,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We are starting to play a little better each game, and our passing connections were on.”
Carlin said her team did most of the talking during the halftime break. Despite leading by a pair of goals, the Trojans’ players believed they could do better. “I didn’t have to say a lot,” Carlin said. “They talked about getting the short passing game working. They knew (the players) what we had to do to give us a strong second half.”

OV went nearly half of the opening 45 minutes before it scored, then the tallies came in bunches. Nikki Olin and Jordan Lidell each had hat tricks, and it was a goal by Olin – off and Lidell assist – less than two minutes into the second half that put the game out of reach.
