NORWICH – Sgt. Stephen Zieno, an officer with the City of Norwich Police Department since 1994, was recognized at Tuesday night’s meeting of the Common Council for his recent promotion to the rank.
Police Chief Joseph Angelino called Zieno “a good, solid officer” who “brings a lot of knowledge to the position.”
Zieno’s wife, as well as his two daughters, all said they were “very proud” of the department’s newest sergeant. According to his mother Jean, who was also on hand for the promotion ceremony, Zieno was born and raised in Norwich and had wanted to be a police officer since his high school days. She added she’s also extremely proud of her son.
“It’s going to present new challenges versus being a patrolman,” said Zieno of the promotion. “It’s something I’d hoped to accomplish, as every officer does. Achieving rank isn’t something everyone gets to do, so that’s a good feeling.”
Zieno’s father Augie said that – over the years – a number of people have spoken to him regarding his son and his role as a city patrolman.
“People who know Steve have called him a polite policeman, and that made me feel good,” he added. “I’m very proud.”
According to Angelino, attaining the rank of sergeant requires knowledge and experience, both of which Zieno has gained a lot of in over a decade on the force. As sergeant, Zieno will supervise a shift of officers and the training of a newly-hired officer.
“The test they take is lengthy and pretty extensive,” he added. “In the years he’s been here, Steve has gained a lot of experience.”
