Family court warrant leads to cocaine bust
NORWICH – Jack G. Alexander, 29, Norwich, was charged with third degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony, following his arrest on an unrelated active warrant issued by the Chenango County Family Court.
A Chenango County Sheriff’s Deputy, accompanied by a member of the City Police, was searching for Alexander – named in the warrant for allegedly failing to pay his child support – on the night of Sept. 20. When taken into custody, law enforcement officials said Alexander was found to be in possession of 22 individually packaged bags of crack-cocaine.
While Sheriff’s Office Lt. Richard Cobb said it’s not uncommon to find drugs during a routine arrest such as Alexander’s, the amount confiscated was, he admitted, “larger than usual.”
The street value of the crack-cocaine, he added, was estimated at approximately $50 per bag, $1,100 in total.
According to Cobb, Alexander was arrested on the active family court warrant and taken to the Chenango County Correctional Facility in lieu of a $1,700 purge or to serve 60 days behind bars. On Wednesday, he was arraigned on the criminal possession charge and remanded to the jail on $10,000 cash bail.
