Greene to host benefit for flood victims
GREENE – Floodfest-Greene, a benefit for those affected by the recent severe flooding, will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 2 at the Geneganstlet Golf Course.
Games, bake sales, a bike run and numerous food vendors are just a few of the activities to look forward to at this free benefit, said event coordinator Wess Van Voorhis. All proceeds will be donated to a local community awareness group so that aid will be properly distributed.
“Everyone has been fantastic about putting this event together,” said Voorhis, explaining how he came up with the idea while driving to work last week. “I had the idea in the morning ... seeing all of the debris on the side of the road ... and by literally 7 o’clock that night we were having a committee meeting.”
Voorhis explained that everyone involved with the event so far has donated their time and materials so that, as of today, there have been zero expenses.
In particular, each of the eight bands including Bad Influence, No Quarter, Endless Mountains Trio and A Country Mile, have donated their time to the fundraiser. According to Voorhis, other bands have also volunteered, but there is simply not enough time in the day.
Sign-up for the motorcycle ride begins at 8 a.m. for a 10 a.m. ride. It will be $10 per rider and all makes and models are welcome.
Children’s games will be available throughout the day as well as number of specialized raffles including, Voorhis hopes, an adult beverage basket.
Voorhis said donations for the event are still welcome and anyone who would like to purchase a sponsorship package can do so by calling 725-1446. Anyone who cannot attend the event can donate by visiting the Floodfest Facebook page and clicking on the Floodfest Greene Donate Here button.
Everyone who attends is also urged to bring non-perishable food items, children’s clothing and toys, and Christmas decorations.
“People I didn’t expect are coming out of the woodwork and looking like champions,” said Voorhis. “There are a lot of hurdles but luckily things are working out great.”
