Norwich cross country team sweeps Sus Valley

NORWICH – At Gibson Elementary School Tuesday, Norwich celebrated senior recognition day with a sweep of Susquehanna Valley. Sarah Spittler paced the girls to a 21-34 victory timing a 23:28 over the 3.1-mile course. On the boys’ side, John Mooney and Matt Murray placed first and third respectively in a 23-34 win.
Elsewhere for the Tornado, Sydney Chaffee and Martha Clemens were third and fourth among the 10-girl field.
NHS’s Jamie Zieno and Nuri Harper took fifth and sixth for Norwich as 18 boys participated in the race.

GREENE – Greene’s unblemished mark reached 9-0 Tuesday against longtime rival Afton as Jahna Driscoll scored a pair of goals for the Trojans.
Driscoll was set up each time by junior Emily Conroe, and Conroe made it three assists when she fed Cathy Stahl. Stahl took a pass on the right side of the penalty circle, dribbled once, and blasted the ball in.
Afton’s goalie, Haley Tammadge, made 12 saves, and kept her team close, said Greene coach, Sue Carlin. “We had some really good opportunities, especially in the first half,” Carlin said. “(Tammadge) made some great saves, but we were getting off quality shots.”

SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville played its second straight strong game defeating Clinton on Tuesday.
Alyssa Palmer and Grace Dunshee put the Marauders (5-5-1) in front with goals in the first 20 minutes of play. “We were tired and sore after last night, and it was a good team effort today,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “We were definitely more aggressive, and put on a lot more pressure in the circle today. That helped out.”
S-E took a 2-1 lead into the second half, and Dunshee added an insurance goal to help secure the win. S-E hosts Canastota Thursday.

BAINBRIDGE – A handball in the penalty box led to the game’s first goal 65 minutes into play as UV’s Taylor Davis converted the penalty kick, the only tally the Storm would need.
“We didn’t play our best game tonight,” said UV coach Janelle Ross. “We have a lot of nagging injuries, and physically we weren’t at our peak.”
UV goalie Jordan Anderson moved out to the field in the second half, and she came away with an insurance goal for her team with five seconds left in regulation. “Jordan’s tenacious, and she never gives up on a play,” Ross said.
UV (6-3-2) is at Unatego Thursday.

Bailey Rutan scored all five goals for the Red Lions, who led 2-0 at halftime. “They have good skills and good players. Their foot speed and skill were a notch above ours, and it showed today,” said OV coach Kevin Springer. “They made their runs, and Rutan did a nice job cutting inside our fullbacks. We allowed too many breaks, and (Rutan) capitalized.”
OV (4-3) hosts Madison Thursday.

OXFORD – Oxford dug itself out of an early two-goal hole, and climbed back to the .500 mark overall after rallying past the Bulldogs Tuesday afternoon.
Delhi’s Kerianna Clement and Jackie Newkerk scored in the first eight minutes. That lead stood until the last seven minutes of the half when Julianne Heggie and twin sister Jacquelyn netted goals. “We didn’t start out so well, but we definitely picked up momentum at the end of the first half, and that carried over,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle.
Julianne Heggie scored the go-ahead goal 11 minutes into the second half. Sister Jacquelyn hit a cornerkick that ticked off the Delhi keeper’s hands, and Julianne headed the ball in. Five minutes later, Emily Smith set up Jacquelyn Heggie’s second goal of the game.
“Delhi came out and played really well,” Cragle said. “I was proud that we were able to come back from the two-goal deficit.”
Megan Golden picked up her first victory in goal making 12 saves. Golden was called into action due to the injury of regular starter, Brenna Jones.
Oxford (4-4-1) is at Walton Thursday.
