Pink Ribbon Walk for cancer awareness set for Saturday

NORWICH – The public is invited to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month this weekend by participating in Chenango County’s first Pink Ribbon Walk fundraiser.
The event will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Weiler Park in Norwich. Free will donations and fundraising events will be hosted throughout the morning in an effort to help those who struggle with breast cancer and are in need of financial support to cover their medical costs.
This is Chenango County’s first Pink Ribbon Walk, and event coordinators are optimistic about the expected turnout. According to organizers Courtney Fillmore and her mother, Candy Petry, the event is expected to draw a good amount of attention as people wish to show their committment to the cause.
“We have a good amount of sponsorship from businesses and we are working with the American Cancer Society in Binghamton,” said Petry. “We’ve had a lot of people who want to do this ... We’ve had a good deal of interest from the community and from people who want to help.”
Baked goods and home-made candies will be sold and T-shirts will be available. Several activities will also take place for participants and children. Face painting and raffles are planned and karaoke will be available. Additionally, there will be a Chinese auction and a balloon launch is scheduled at the end of the event for participants who wish to float a message of hope.
So far, nearly 200 people are expected to participate in this year’s walk; however, with many attendees coordinating groups, this number may grow as Saturday draws near. Participants from greater city areas including Binghamton and Utica are expected to contribute to the event, offering their services and donations to residents of Chenango County. Participants must register at the event and donation forms will be available.
“Our goal is to raise $2,000. It would be a great thing,” said Fillmore, who explained she is optimistic about Saturday’s potential turnout.
In addition to money donations, Petry and Fillmore are also looking for volunteers to help with Saturday’s activities.
