Cyclones’ B, C teams pick up wins

ONEIDA – The Norwich Cyclones “B” team played “Kayahoora” (West Canada) at Oneida on Saturday night, and came away with a 30-6 win in Pop Warner action.
Marcus Benjamin scored on a two-yard touchdown run, Owen Blackman set up a Jonathan Heggie 20-yard TD jaunt, Payton Stirone scored on a one-yard TD run and Zachery Race raced 70 yards for another TD. Cameron Ivan kicked three out of four two-point extra point placements.
On defense, Ty Rifanburg had an interception, with Andrew Jackson, Benjamin, Stirone, and Robert Shepard playing big defense.
On Sunday in a battle of undefeated teams, the Cyclone “C” team downed Rome 12-6.
The Cyclones went on top on a five-yard TD pass from Tom Parrella to JT Vinal with 40 seconds remaining in the first half. Drew Walsh scored on a one-yard run in the fourth to seal a big win for the Cyclones.
On defense, Walsh, Keegan Wright, Alex McCann, Vinal, Parrella, Elijah Rodriguez, Noah Marvin, and Carson Maynard played big D, with Griffin Clipston making a big fumble recovery.
The Cyclone “A” team fell to the undefeated Colts, 21-18.
The game ended with an incomplete Cyclone pass in the endzone at the Colts’ five yard line. The Cyclones were in the red-zone on numerous occasions, but could not reach pay-dirt.
Cole Rifanburg had a pair of TDs on a two-yard TD just before the half, and a 10-yard run in the third. He also set up the last Cyclones chance on a fourth-down pass reception to the eight.
Carlos Itheir returned a Colts kickoff for a 70-yard TD in the third to put the Cyclones up 18-14. The Cyclones continue to be vulnerable to the big play. The Colts’ TDs were all on a fourth down – a 31-yard pass and a pair of 45-yard scampers.
With the exception of the big play, the Cyclones’ defense held the Colts in check with Dan Zieno, Rifanburg, Carter Hubbard, Cameron Edwards, and Dalen Geislinger playing well. Jordan Vinal had a touchdown-saving, open-field tackle, while Nick Murphy intercepted a fourth-down Colts pass and returned the ball deep inside the Colt red zone late in the fourth.
The Cyclones “D” team played well against a speedy Rome Colts team in a controlled, non-scoring scrimmage.
The Cyclones cheer squads are preparing for their October 15t league championships at the Utica Auditorium.
The Cyclones are on the road again next week with the A, C, and D teams at V-V-S. The D team plays at 10 a.m.; the C at 12 p.m. and the A team at 2 p.m. The B team plays at 2 p.m. in Cazenovia.
