Coventry hosts Civil War commemorative event this weekend
COVENTRY – The Coventry Town Museum will hold its 7th annual Civil War Commemorative event beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday at the Congregational Church.
“The event is always embraced by the community,” said Janine Hakim, vice president of the Coventry Town Museum association. “It’s a great opportunity to remember and celebrate those times with food, music and the community coming together.”
The event is titled “Letters Home to Coventryville from the War” and will honor Sergeant Henry Andrews, who sent more than 130 letters home to his wife during the four years he was fighting.
Andrews’ descendent, James Blakeslee, will be on hand to answer questions about his ancestor and the process by which the letters came into his possession and were subsequently given to the Coventry Museum. Nancy Bromley of the Greene Historical Society will read excerpts from the letters and answer questions.
“It was so exciting to receive such an amazing treasure,” said Bromley.
Lunch will be served as well as a pot-luck dinner at 5 p.m.. Following the dinner, anyone who wishes to accompany members of the museum to Andrews’ final resting place may do so at which time a ceremony will be held for the fallen soldier and a flag placed at his grave.
Civil War re-enactors of the 114th NY Volunteer Regiment will also be encamped on the grounds as well as the Civil War Fife and Drum Corps and the Elmira Soldiers Relief Organization, which re-enacts women’s roles during the time sending aid to soldiers in the field.
“This whole event involves a lot of people with various skills and dedication working together to make it happen,” said Hakim.
In addition, the event will kick-off the 150th anniversary of the Civil War program being put on by the Chenango County Civil War Commemorative Society. The society is made up of historical societies, town historians and interested parties from around the county.
A series of articles on different aspects of the Civil War will also run in The Evening Sun beginning at the end of October.
