Marauders’ offense breaks loose

Evening Sun Report

Field Hockey

Sherburne-Earlville 5, Hamilton 1
SHERBURNE – In the first meeting with Hamilton this season, Sherburne-Earlville scored the only goal of the game with a penalty stroke. Tuesday afternoon, the Marauders’ offense broke loose for a season-high five tallies in a rout of the Emerald Knights.
“We knew they would be tough and scrappy, but we were just on the goalie all the time, and it paid off,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “The team knew this is ( the type of play) that I wanted. It was such a great team effort.”
Maggie Dunshee scored twice in the first half for S-E. She netted the opening goal five minutes into the contest off a Maggie Burlison pass. Burlison made it 2-0 midway through the half, and just two minutes later, Dunshee found the back of the cage again, this time off a Desiree Brown pass.

Greene 8, Walton 0
GREENE – Greene’s offense and defense were clicking on every level in what head coach Sue Carlin described as her team’s best overall game of the season.
“It was just a fun game to watch,” Carlin said. “Every single one of them played just great.”
The game was scoreless until the 16:52 mark when the Trojans drew a penalty stroke. A Walton player kicked the ball near the goal line to create the stroke attempt, and Emily Conroe put the ball away for the first of her two goals. The offensive flood gates burst open from that point with Emily Gascon feeding Brandee Schoonmaker a minute later for the second tally. Conroe added her second goal two minutes later, and Greene’s fourth goal was picture-perfect. Caitlin Gorton initiated the play from the defensive end and passed to Jahna Driscoll in the middle. Driscoll fed the ball back outside to Gascon, who hit a cutting Driscoll in the middle of the penalty circle for the spot-on shot. “It was just about the prettiest goal you would ever see,” Carlin said of Driscoll’s tally.
Driscoll added another goal, Seranda Barton came off the bench to score one goal and add an assist, while Jessica Durdon and Katherine Klecha picked up tallies.
Greene hosts the 3rd Annual Barrows/Bromley Tournament with first-round games on Thursday. Greene meets Whitney Point, while Maine-Endwell and Marathon square off in the other matchup.

Girls’ Tennis

Susquehanna Valley 5, Norwich 2
NORWICH – Out of a loss to Susquehanna Valley Tuesday afternoon came the completion of a perfect season.
Norwich senior Sophie Stewart wrapped up an 11-0 campaign at second singles beating the Sabers’ Allie Stark, 6-3, 6-2. Stewart did not lose a set this season and only allowed as many as four games in a set once. She had just four losses at second singles over the past three years, and one of those was by default. “She just came in focused this year, and was a real force,” said Norwich coach John Stewart of his niece, Sophie. “The reality is that she was a point we could count on for every match.”
Norwich’s other victory came at first doubles as Jenny Borfitz and Breanna Cashman avenged a loss to SV from earlier this year beating Karen Engle and Morgan Hassig, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3).
The Tornado (6-5) host Johnson City today at 4 p.m. Before the match, Norwich will dedicate court four (the first doubles court) to the late Krissie Collier, who passed away earlier this year. Collier played varsity tennis for several years, and she along with partner Katie Orioli were unbeaten at first doubles during Collier’s senior year.
