Valley Heights plans fundraiser auction

NORWICH – Valley Heights Christian Academy is making the final preparations needed for its second annual live auction fundraiser at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Chenango County Fairgrounds.
The parochial school – which operates as an extension of Calvary Baptist Church – is seeking donations and encouraging community members to attend the event. With the support of students, parents and volunteers, Valley Heights is hoping to reach its goal of raising $15,000 to assist the financial needs of its students. Brian Conover, lead pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and school spokesman, said he is excited and hopes the event will prove beneficial for students as well as the community.
Valley Heights maintains an active enrollment of nearly 100 students that pay tuition, which acts as the primary support for the private school. The purpose of the auction, according to Conover, is to help some of these students with the burden of tuition. The auction will put a cap on tuition costs, keeping it from rising next year. This saves a great deal of financial restraints for many families, said Conover.
“This auction is to benefit the future of our children,” Conover stated. “Every penny will benefit the community by helping these students.”
Last year, Conover said the auction was very successful – $12,000 was raised when an estimated 100 people participated. Expectations are higher Saturday as the school aims to beat last year’s total.
Holding the auction at the fairgrounds is a decision Conover said gives the school options not available at the school. The auction includes large-scale items such as farming equipment and an ATV.
Parents and students have been actively involved throughout the process, preparing for the event and offering donations to be auctioned off. Nearly 40 students plan to take a role in the event by working as hot dog vendors, hosting bake sales and chicken barbecues, and modeling and handing out items during the auction.
“I think it’s been really neat ... Our students pretty much run this,” Conover said.
“This is for the whole community,” he said, “not just for the church.”
