Afton spoils Oxford's senior night

OXFORD – Afton won two games in a season for the first time in the program’s short history, and spoiled Oxford’s senior recognition night with a shutout victory Wednesday night.
The Crimson Knights, who beat Sidney last week, scored three goals in the second half, the first tally an “own goal,” and the last two by Ricky Parsons and Joe Shearer coming less than a minute apart.
“Afton was obviously the more confident and prepared team tonight,” said Oxford coach Jim Champlin. “As big a disappointment as it was for our kids on senior night, I’m sure this was was a great boost for Afton’s program.”
Cameron Oswald made 11 saves for Afton to earn his first shutout in goal.

GREENE – Unatego avenged a loss to Greene from last weekend rallying to defeat the injury-depleted Trojans Wednesday afternoon.
Derek Joyce scored the tying goal in the second half, and Troy White netted the winner in sudden-victory overtime. The Trojans were missing one key starter due to illness, and top midfielder Corey Dietrich left the game early due to injury. “My hat is off to Unatego, we had some guys out of the lineup, and they were able to take advantage,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “This (the loss) is a little bit of a letdown. We wanted to keep our momentum going, but I also wanted to get out of the game without anymore injuries.”
Alex Driscoll scored in the first half for Greene (11-2), his 25th goal of the season. The Trojans face Sidney today.

SCHENEVUS – Coming off a scoreless day a day earlier, G-MU notched the game’s only goal on a first-half penalty shot to win its fourth game of the season.
Greg Delaney converted the penalty shot for G-MU (4-5-3) at 28:25 of the first half. The Raiders had numerous other opportunities to score that were stuffed by Schenevus’ goalie.
“Their goalie stopped probably three breakaways, but overall we pretty much controlled the middle of the field and played a good game,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger.

GREENE – Unadilla Valley’s defense threw a blanket on Greene sophomore scoring leader Paige Wilcox, but Wilcox escaped that cover one time to score the game’s lone tally in Tuesday night’s contest.
“Unadilla Valley was marking (Paige) tight, but she was still able to finish,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “She had to work for her goal.”
With a loose ball bouncing around near the penalty box, Wilcox made the most of her opportunity scoring at the 29:24 mark of the second half.
It was the ninth win for Greene this season, and second over UV. The Trojans (9-4-1) play at Delhi today.

NORWICH – On an emotional day when court four was renamed for the late Krissie Collier, Norwich used Wednesday’s victory over Johnson City as a prequel for the Section IV Class B tournament next Monday.
“Today was an opportunity to play the same format as the sectional tournament,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “I hope this match gives our players the confidence to go forward. It would be awesome if our first-year players could win at least one match at sectionals.”
Breanna Cashman and Jenny Borfitz, normally the first doubles unit, played first and second singles against JC, and came away with their first varsity singles wins. Cashman lost just one game, and Borfitz won her two sets at love.
In doubles, defending Section IV champions Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart eased to a straight sets win. Also, Alyssa Stagliano and Kristi Orioli, who will make up Norwich’s second doubles team at sectionals, won in straight sets.
Steph Elder added the fifth win for Norwich in her first singles match this season taking her third singles matchup in three sets. “The kids played with a lot of emotion today, and it showed in their scores,” Stewart said.
Norwich finishes the regular season with a 7-5 record.

The Tornado (12-3) were led by Ryan Hagen, who shot an even-par 36 over the front nine at C.C.C. Eric Walling was next at 38, Corey Johnson shot 40, seventh-grader Corey Johnson turned in a 43, while Casey Marson carded a 44.

Senior Jessica Brooks led the Trojans with four total victories. In addition to swimming on two winning relays, Brooks won the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke. Emily Bertram had three total wins, and Greene head coach Mike Platta singled out Moriah McCauley’s victory in the 500 freestyle. McCauley won the event in a personal-best 6:34.78. “Moriah has worked hard in practice, and she earned that time tonight,” Platta said.
Greene hosts Sherburne-Earlville Friday.

John Mooney led the top foursome completing the hilly five-kilometer course in 19:29. Jamie Zieno was second in 20:36, Nate Ashton placed third in 20:51, and Nuri Harper completed his race in 21:28. Nick Mooney rounded out Norwich’s scoring with a 22:33 to place eighth.
Sarah Spittler’s second-place finish time of 23:19 led the NHS girls in a 22-33 loss to the Wildcats.

Ian Benedict placed second overall in the field leading S-E’s boys with a 20:03.
On the girls’ side, Haley Muth ran a season-best 26:29 to lead the Marauders and place third overall. “It was a refreshing meet in that it was a flat course as compared the more hill-laden courses we have been running,” said S-E coach Anne Geary. “This was a good indication to see where we are at, and the times were encouraging.”
