Team Chenango 5K a success
OXFORD – Saturday’s suicide prevention and awareness 5K run and walk resulted in an unexpected outpouring of support, said Danielle Marshman Williamson, event coordinator.
“We only had 14 people sign up ahead of time ... and we ended up with over 60,” said Williamson. Proceeds from the event benefit Team Chenango, led by Marshman, whose members will travel to San Francisco next July to participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Overnight.
The walk and run began in Oxford at 10 a.m., however, in conjunction with the Oxford High School’s homecoming parade, a large crowd turned out ahead of time to show their support.
Williamson explained that many local businesses contributed time and resources to provide food for the event and various activities for all age groups. Pumpkin carving, decorations and face-painting were just a few of the booths located in the park for families to pass the time before the run/walk began.
“We’re had a great turnout and everyone is having a good time,” said Williamson. “Most importantly, we’re getting the word out that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable with enough support ... we’re seeing that support today.”
