Greene theater takes ‘Anne Frank’ production on the road
GREENE – The Chenango River Theatre is currently performing the second of their American Classics Series, The Diary of Anne Frank, to provide an educational performance for local schools.
Performances will be held at the Chenango River Theatre in Greene Thursdays-Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. through this weekend. The show will then relocate to the Chenango County Council of the Arts for one educational performance and one performance open to the public at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 28.
The educational performances, according to Artistic and Managing Director Bill Lelbach, provide an opportunity for schools in Chenango County witness stage-plays that they are currently studying in school. The success of last year’s performance, Of Mice and Men, which drew more than 500 students, led Lelbach to continue the series.
“We wanted to provide an opportunity for these students to see a professional work,” said Lelbach. “Unfortunately, we only have 99 seats ... all of the student shows are sold out.”
This year, Lelbach estimates that 1,100 students from across the county will get to see the show. He explained that adding the mainstage shows allowed the theatre to give schools a discounted rate and he said he hopes to increase the number of venues to which his shows will travel in future years.
“Many schools in the north of the county find it difficult to make it to Greene,” he said. “That’s why we’re doing a few shows at the Council of the Arts, to make it more accessible.”
Lelbach said he hopes to add a few shows in Binghamton next year. He explained that because the theatre is the only Equity, professional non-profit theatre in the area, people travel from as far away as northern Pennsylvania to see the performances.
As an Equity theatre, all for the performers are union members and therefore he receives resumes from across the country. According to Lelbach, the part of Anne Frank received 300 submissions, some from as far away as California.
Ultimately, however, the role of Anne Frank went to Windsor graduate, Sydney Stachyra.
“It was interesting ... despite so many submissions, my best choice for the role was for someone local,” said Lelbach.
