FEMA brings mobile recovery center to Oxford

OXFORD – A mobile Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster recovery unit will be stationed on Rt. 12 in downtown Oxford through Thursday.
According to Public Information Officer Sarah Olson, the mobile unit is set up near NBT Bank to provide information for everyone who had flood damage caused by Tropical Storm Lee, which ravaged much of the east coast of the United States in early September.
Representatives from the state of New York and the Small Business Administration will also be on site to discuss opportunities for low-interest, long-term loans that may be available for individuals and small businesses around the area.
“We are trying to reach each and every person who was affected,” said Olson. “There are still many people who aren’t registered for disaster recovery aid.”
Phone banks are located on site for anyone who has not yet registered.
Olson explained that many people have trouble getting the information they need over the phone and the mobile unit provides these individuals a chance to speak to a representative face to face.
One of the most prevalent concerns, according to Olson, results from individuals receiving letters stating that they are ineligible for FEMA aid. She explained that many people do not read the entire letter, which often cites an easily remedied solution to the situation.
For example, she said, individuals who have insurance, but are not covered for the flood damage, must have a letter from their insurance company stating that they will not be covered. This is an issue that is easily fixed but often overlooked, she explained.
“We want to be hear for people who have questions or worries about their situation,” said Judith Kearney, an on-site disaster assistance employee.
Olson also encouraged anyone who can provide an update to their damage assessment to visit the mobile unit. Oftentimes damage is discovered once the weather changes that was not previously noticed and FEMA will take that into consideration when determining cost and compensation.
Anyone displaced from their homes can receive information about rental resources around the area as well. A list of rental properties is available and current, said Olson.
The mobile unit will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Thursday of this week and will then travel to Sherburne, where it will be open Saturday-Monday.
“We’re really hope more people will be able to visit the site and get the information that they need,” said Olson. “We’re here to help and to answer the very important questions that everyone have.”
