UV bests Norwich in tourney consolation game

Unadilla Valley 2, Norwich 1
NEW BERLIN – In the consolation game of the New York Pizzeria Tournament, UV sophomore Taylor Davis scored two second-half goals leading the Storm to a comeback victory Wednesday afternoon.
Davis scored the tying goal with 23 minutes left, and netted the winner with seven minutes to play after receiving a long ball up the middle.
Norwich grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead when Alyssa MacIntosh connected on a shot from just outside the 18-yard box. UV (8-5-2) returns to action next week in the Section IV playoffs.

NEW BERLIN – Walton scored four goals in the first 20 minutes of the game, and cruised to a title win in the New York Pizzeria Tournament at New Berlin Wednesday.
Molly McGuire and Marissa Castillo had two goals apiece for the Warriors.
“We just weren’t prepared at the start, and I think the girls were shell-shocked,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “After those first four goals, we woke up and played our game. We started to pass and communicate well, and had ample opportunities to score.”
G-MU’s Miranda Hill scored unassisted in the second half. G-MU (8-6-1) is idle until its first-round sectional playoff game next week.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley needed nearly 60 minutes to score a goal on Tuesday, and it took 53 minutes before breaking through against Stockbridge Valley in Wednesday’s victory.
“We totally dominated, but it’s like we played in slow gear,” said OV coach Kevin Springer. “It was an ugly night, but we still came out on top, and I’m glad of that.”
Nikki Olin scored her 10th goal of the season with 27 minutes left, and Jordan Lidell’s 14th tally of the season with 12 minutes left provided a two-goal cushion. Jessica Loomis recorded her third shutout this season for OV (8-6), who is at Stockbridge Valley today.

Field Hockey

Greene 6, Windsor 1
GREENE – Greene moved a step closer to finishing the regular season unbeaten scoring five times in the opening half in Wednesday’s convincing win over Windsor.
Emily Gascon scored three minutes into the contest after passes from Emma Anderson and Jahna Driscoll. Driscoll along with Emily Conroe had two goals apiece in the victory, and Paige Castle added a goal.
“I liked the team that showed up today,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “Our goal was to score in the first five minutes, and we were able to do that. We played and passed so much better today.”
Carlin worked in her entire bench by the end of the first half, and came away impressed with the defensive play of Erin Funnell, who made multiple block/tackles.
Greene hosts Sidney today.

Margaretville 8, Afton 1
MARGARETVILLE – Nine different Margaretville players had a hand in the scoring in Wednesday’s non-league romp over Afton.
Kyle Short and Ryan Sanford had two goals apiece for Margaretville (9-5-1), who led 4-0 at the half. “Afton had just 11 kids, and we just took advantage of our opportunities,” said Margaretville coach, Jeremy Marks.
Cameron Oswald scored for Afton with Josh Akshar picking up the assist.

Volleyball

Norwich 3, Susquehanna Valley 0
CONKLIN – Norwich won for the fourth time this season and second against Susquehanna Valley beating the Sabers Tuesday, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19.
Norwich’s improved play at the net was keyed by Katie Callahan’s 11 assists, and seven kills apiece from Jaime Berger and Taylor Cook. Laura Zagada paced the defense with a team-high nine digs. “Both teams were evenly matched, and it came down to who wanted it more,” said Norwich coach Shelly Alger. “We have been averaging more kills and more digs per game. If we are able to keep our serves up, we’ll do fine.”
Before the game, Susquehanna Valley’s players reciprocated Norwich’s donations to the Sabers’ program last month when severe flooding disheveled the Conklin community. “They honored us with a signed volleyball and a picture frame with pictures showing our girls giving their girls the (donation) buckets,” Alger said. “They also gave us a Hershey bar with our picture on it. Who would have thought such a small act of kindness would mean so much?  All girls from both teams learned a life lesson.”

HANCOCK – Oxford improved to 8-3 on the season beating Hancock in four games Wednesday.
Teresa Ivarson had six aces and eight digs for the Blackhawks, and Nicole Head had a team-high eight kills and seven assists.

Morgan Bullis had 13 kills, and Alexis Macy picked up six assists and four kills to pace B-G (8-4).
Bekah Prezorski finished with 16 digs, 12 kills, and five aces for Afton (0-12).
