Loomis, Stewart win third straight Class B title

Section IV Tournament
CHENANGO BRIDGE – The delays due to weather and the change of venue for the finals only delayed the inevitable. After starting the week with a pair of wins in the Class B doubles tournament at Recreation Park in Binghamton, the final two matches were stretched over four days for Norwich seniors Bryn Loomis and Sophie Stewart.
Moving to Chenango Valley High School for the finals Friday afternoon, Loomis and Stewart made quick work of Maine-Endwell’s Cara Boothroyd and Maria Orband taking the Class B title, 6-2, 6-0. It was the third straight sectional title for the Tornado tandem, and Norwich moves on to the Section IV State Qualifier this Friday at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
“They played about as well as the (outside) conditions would let us,” said Norwich coach John Stewart. “It was windy and cold, and the other girls played a lot more nervous than us. In tennis, matchups are everything, and we were able to make it through without much trouble.”
M-E’s doubles team won the first and third games to lead 2-1 in the first set. From there, Loomis and Stewart swept the final 11 games to win going away. The Norwich duo is the defending Section IV champions, and have lost just one match against Section IV competition since their sophomore season. “It will be a dogfight,” Stewart said. “There are four excellent doubles teams playing for three positions. We will be tested and we’ll need to volley well and adjust our game to playing inside. It’s been a good run, and it would be a disappointment if we didn’t win. Still, no one can take away those three championships.”
