Unadilla Valley captures Chenango Cup U12 title

OXFORD – On a cold, blustery Saturday, Oct. 22 fall afternoon at Emerson Soccer Field in Oxford, roughly 400 people attended the annual Chenango Cup Soccer Tournament.
In an emotional quadruple-overtime title game, the Unadilla Valley U12 team capped an amazing season beating Oxford 1-0. The victory avenged a loss to Oxford from earlier this season, UV’s sole defeat.
Scoring for UV was forward River McCumiskey (UV’s leading scorer) with an assist coming from Jessica Smith, who had five goals in the tournament.
“I informed the kids all season long that they are all representatives and reflection of the South New Berlin and New Berlin communities, our UV School District, their parents, and themselves,” said head coach Ganesh Remy Ramsaran. “I was very proud of everyone on the team for their sportsmanship, teamwork, and overall effort all season long. “
Ramrasan took pride in playing every player on the team a minimum of one full quarter in each game. In order to win and be successful Ramsaran explained to his team that you have to hate losing more than you love winning, and that is how sports directly impacts lessons in life. Ramsaran, a marathon runner and a multi-sport star athlete in high school, gave his team extra incentive to win by promising to dye his hair purple and gold to match UV’s school colors, while adding a pink stripe down the middle as requested by his daughter Cara Ramsaran, a midfielder and goalie for the team.
UV dismantled its opponents in the first four division games. It never trailed in any game, and won the four contests by a combined score of 7-1. Earning the top seed in its bracket, UV moved on to the semifinals where it beat Sherburne One.
Smith scored two quick goals against Sherburne with the assists coming from McCumiskey and Spencer Meade. Coach Ramsaran said that his goalies – Adam Lamont, Colby Moore, Meegan White, Cara Ramsaran and Brady George – all stepped up and were absolutely amazing.
The tournament final was a game described by many in attendance as an instant classic. Both teams were evenly matched and neither team could take the upper hand. The UV keeper, George, came up with picture-perfect mid-air diving save that rallied the troops, and sweeper Julia Oglesby cleared the ball preventing numerous shots on goal. Once in overtime, UV missed a few shots that went wide as it continued to pressure the Oxford defense. The end came when Smith took the ball down from midfield and passed it to McCumiskey, who drilled the ball into the back of the net.
