Greene 2, Oxford 0
GREENE – Led by leading scorer Paige Wilcox, Greene (12-4-1) advanced to the second round of the Section IV Class C playoffs with its third win in two weeks over the undermanned Blackhawks.
Wilcox had a goal in each half raising her season total to 39 tallies. Her first goal came with 25 minutes left in the first half when she chased down an Oxford clear, and maneuvered past the Oxford defense to score unassisted. Nicole Tumminia found Wilcox on a long pass to set up the Trojans’ second goal at 20:56 of the second.
“Oxford has had a lot of injuries, and I think it affected them,” said Greene coach Brandy Stone. “But (Oxford) definitely had the potential to be good at any time. Playing them three times in two weeks, it made it hard, and they did well with the players they had.”
Greene plays at Elmira Notre Dame Friday. The Trojans lost to the Crusaders in the sectional semifinals last year. “They lost some players from last year, and we expect it to be a competitive game,” Stone said.

Newark Valley 3, Unadilla Valley 1
NEW BERLIN – Newark Valley jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 14 minutes of the game, and UV was unable to recover in Tuesday’s Section IV playoff game.
Kacie Cossin scored 7:09 into the contest, and Cossin added a second goal less than seven minutes later. “At the beginning of the game, my defense was off of their marks,” said UV coach Janelle Ross. “They’re usually right in a rhythm at the start of the game, but today they had a hard time getting started.”
UV picked up some momentum when Taylor Davis tallied with 4:51 left in the first half putting her team in good position for a second-half run. “We just weren’t getting to the ball with our passes,” Ross said of the second half. “We played better in the second half, but we still had trouble transitioning from our defense to our front line.”

G-MU 3, Southern Cayuga 2
SOUTHERN CAYUGA – G-MU’s two-hour road trip to Southern Cayuga High School was worth it.
Blake Stensland, battling illness all game long, scored the winning goal for G-MU with 2:52 left in regulation as the Raiders moved on to the second round of the Section IV Class D playoffs.
Stensland picked up a loose ball after a Southern Cayuga player cleared the ball. Stensland then connected on a long-range shot outside the 18-yard box. “I had to take Blake off the field several times during the game because she was so sick,” said G-MU coach Tina Cole. “I had just put her back in (before the winning goal), and I think she just wanted the game to be over.”
Despite entering the game as the lower seed, the Raiders controlled most of the game with aggressive play to the ball. Still, Southern Cayuga was able to tie the game early in the second half on Jessie Kopp’s second goal.
The Raiders grabbed the 2-1 halftime lead thanks to goals from Stensland and Taylor Nichols. Nichols put her team up a tally after a chipped pass from Sabrina Brooks, and short dish by Lauren Hill.
The Raiders play at Candor Friday at 3:30 p.m. It’s a homecoming for Cole, who graduated from Candor in 1991.

Hamilton 3, Otselic Valley 2
SOUTH OTSELIC – Otselic Valley was unsuccessful in its first Section III playoff game in at least a decade.
The Vikings erased a 2-0 first-half deficit, but it was the Emerald Knights who tallied the only goal of the second half to prevail Tuesday afternoon.
Clara Jones scored for Hamilton (6-8-1) with 26:18 left in the second 40-minute period. “We took a huge step forward this season, it’s too bad we lost,” said OV coach Kevin Springer. “We were hoping to at least get past our first-round game.”
Katie Weeks and Katie Von Munch scored for Hamilton in the game’s first nine minutes to give the visitors a two-goal edge. Less than 10 minutes later, the Vikings tied the game. Jordan Lidell scored her 20th goal of the season off a Nikki Olin pass, and Hope Reynolds tied the game at 21:26. Lidell finished the season with 14 assists to go with her goals, and Olin had 14 goals and 12 assists.
“It was a great season, and I was so glad for the seniors,” Springer said. “They had been getting their butts kicked the past three years, but they stuck with it and can go out with a winning season.”
The Vikings finished 10-7 overall and placed third in the Central Counties League.

Holland Patent 7, Sherburne-Earlville 0
HOLLAND PATENT – Sherburne-Earlville struggled from the start against Holland Patent in Tuesday’s first-round sectional playoff game.
Brooke Smith had two first-half goals, and Alyssa Curtis scored two of her three goals in the second half in Holland Patent’s blowout victory. “We didn’t bring out our ‘A’ game today, and they had their ‘A plus’ game,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman. “We weren’t communicating well in the first half and not challenging the ball. Against a good team that is turning it on, it makes things worse.”
The Marauders finished 7-9-1 on the season, a step in the right direction for a club that has not qualified for the postseason in recent years. “We finished third in our league and we did some good things this year,” Cooman said.
Summary
(5-0 at half)
Goals-assists: (HP) Brooke Smith, 2-1; Alyssa Curtis, 3-0; Julia Hayes, 1-1; Michelle Smith, 1-1.
Shots-corners: (HP) 17-21. (SE) 2-2.
