UV 'Heroes' tout anti-bullying program at open house tomorrow

NEW BERLIN – The Unadilla Valley Middle school has developed a new anti-bullying campaign focusing on the education of their students as opposed to punishment.
Members of the bullying committee will give a presentation at the UV open house at 6 p.m. Thursday.
“We wanted to make sure it was a positive message,” said committee member Karen Ramirez. “We’re focusing on education to prevent bullying from happening.”
The program began last March when Ramirez and other teachers noticed a problem with bullying in the school.
The original program, the Bully-Free Zone, was changed this year to UV Heroes, which Ramirez said works with the positive message standpoint. The idea of the Heroes program, according to Ramirez, is to give students a chance to stand up for themselves and others.
“It’s kids watching out for other kids,” said Laurie Peterson.
Besides the open house presentation, there have also been two assemblies and weekly lessons on the effects and prevention of bullying, said Ramirez. Students also receive red “business cards” that they can use if being bullied or witnessing another student being bullied.
Ramirez explained that the student only had to write their name, or the name of the student being bullied, and give the card to a teacher. Members of the staff would then take the appropriate actions to help educate the students, she said.
“We educate them not to be a bystander ... How it affects others if you’re a bully ... Lessons and skills to stop from being bullied and to stand up for themselves,” said Ramirez.
The middle school teacher of 20 years said she wanted the students involved in the decision making process. Therefore, she said, the Heroes 2.0 group was formed and will focus on students helping new students, bullied students and raising awareness about the effects of bullying.
“We have more than 40 students already volunteering,” she said.
The open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday at the Unadilla Valley Central School.
