Mt. Upton man named as suspect in felony robbery, assault
SOUTH NEW BERLIN – A 29-year-old Mt. Upton man is facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges after an alleged robbery and assault Monday in South New Berlin.
Steven R. Baker, of Angel Lane, Mt. Upton, has been charged with second degree robbery, a class C felony, fourth degree grand larceny, a class E felony, and misdemeanor charges of third degree assault and petit larceny in connection with the crime.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office – partnered with the New Berlin Police Department and New York State Police – investigated the incident.
According to law enforcement officials, at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Monday, a 54-year-old South New Berlin man was assaulted and robbed in the driveway of his West Street home. The victim, whose name was not released, was beaten about the head and face during what the Sheriff’s Office called a “vicious attack.” He was later treated and released from Chenango Memorial Hospital for bruising and lacerations to his face.
The suspect, after forcibly stealing the victim’s wallet, fled on foot.
Baker was arrested Tuesday by sheriff’s deputies on unrelated charges. He was incarcerated at the Chenango County Correctional Facility, without bail, on a New York State Parole Warrant. At this time, the charges against him are being filed with the Chenango County District Attorney’s Office pending prosecution.
Sheriff Ernest Cutting, Jr. said further arrests and additional charges are pending DNA laboratory submissions and analysis.
