DEA, local law enforcement to hold prescription drug “Take Back”
NORWICH – The Norwich City Police Department and Chenango County Sheriff’s Office – partnering with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency – will collect unwanted prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Norwich, Sherburne and Afton police departments.
In recent years, the abuse of prescription drugs has skyrocketed, according to law enforcement officials. The number of accidental poisonings and overdoses is also alarmingly high, and studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends. Typical methods for the disposal of unused prescription drugs – such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash – warned police, could pose both safety and health hazards.
The initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue, as forgotten or unused medications are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. It also prevents unused drugs from entering ground water and municipal water supplies.
“We conducted this same event in April 2011 and it was an overwhelming success,” said Police Chief Joseph Angelino. “We anticipate we’ll be just as busy this Saturday.”
In May, the Norwich PD announced it had collected more than 60 pounds of prescription drugs and other substances. In September of 2010, the department filled three 35-gallon containers – as well as two garbage bags – with prescription drugs, with a combined weight of approximately 120 pounds.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office will staff collection sites at both the Sherburne and Afton Police departments, located at 15 West State St. and 19 Court St., respectively. Unused or unwanted prescriptions or over the counter medications can also be dropped off at the Chenango County Sheriff’s Office between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information contact the Norwich City PD at 334-1212 or the Sheriff’s Office at 334-2000.
