Four Norwich cross country runners earn state meet berths

CHENANGO FORKS – At the Section IV Class B Cross Country Championships, Norwich’s boys team placed second out of four teams, and seniors John Mooney, Nate Ashton, and Jamie Zieno earned qualifying berths at the upcoming New York State Meet.
Maine-Endwell swept the top six spots in the Class B race to earn overall team honors. Mooney was the next-best finisher taking seventh out of 36 runners in 17:39, Ashton was 10th in 18:13, while Zieno came in 12th clocking 18:16. Also scoring for Norwich was Matt Murray (13th, 18:30) and Nuri Harper (20th, 19:45).
The Tornado girls took fourth overall in team scoring, and senior Sarah Spittler’s seventh-place finish in 21:27 was good enough to secure her a trip to the state meet. Also placing for Norwich were Faith Pike (17th, 22:53), Martha Clemens (19th, 23:33), Sydney Chaffee (20th, 23:43), and Abby Snow (21st, 23:52). A total of 36 girls competed in the Class B race.
The New York State Cross Country meet is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12 at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

Volleyball

Oxford places third
HORSEHEADS – In the Section IV Class C semifinals, Oxford wound up tied for third in pool play, and did not advance to the finals.
The Blackhawks dropped two games to Tioga and Thomas Edison, and split its games with Odessa-Montour. “Even though the girls didn't make the finals, I was proud of them as a team to go as far as they did,” said Oxford coach Kim Martin. “The stats may not show it, but they made some pretty impressive plays and they did not give up.”
Overall, Kera Shepler had a team-best seven aces in pool play to go with five assists, Olivia Roach topped the Blackhawks with seven kills and 16 digs, and Nicole Head also pitched in with five assists.
