Bua brings traditional Irish music to 6OTS

OXFORD – Saturday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m., award-winning traditional Irish music ensemble, Bua, will be performing at 6 On The Square (6OTS) as a fundraiser for PEO!  It’s no surprise that Bua, a quartet comprised of some of America’s most talented young musicians, has quickly risen to fame. This benefit concert, for the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), is sponsored by the Hansen Family.
Bua (boo-ah), from the Irish Gaelic word for victory, have evolved and matured since they were at 6OTS in 2009. Back then, their highly acclaimed CD, “An Spealadóir.” their first studio album, was just out. Now, with a new CD under their belt, Bua is Seán Gavin (from Detroit, MI) flute and uilleann pipes; Brian Miller (northern Minnesota) on guitar, bouzouki, and vocals; Brian Hart (from St. Louis, MO) singer/concertina player; and Devin Shepherd (from Chicago, IL) who plays fiddle. Although Gavin has family near County Clare in Ireland and Brian Hart, is fluent in Irish, they are totally American. Despite their US roots, as they tour North America and Europe they are receiving accolades for their spirited, traditional music of Ireland. They have been described by Irish Music Magazine as, “The essence of a superb band!” If you love traditional Irish music, played with energy and passion, this is an evening for you!
In a review of An Spealadóir, CD Baby wrote, “Whether burning through a fiery folk dance or tugging on your soul with a tearful ballad, this band of highly skilled instrumentalists brings new life to these very old songs."
Their new self-released CD, “Down the Green Fields” is something they’re very proud of. They play with precision and intensity that is rarely heard on this side of the Atlantic. Foras na Gaeilge, the intergovernmental agency for the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, helped Bua fund this new CD. The agency, which promotes the Irish language, gave Bua a grant to print the CD information in both Irish Gaelic and English.
The energy and passion of the group Bua, is appropriately paired with this fundraiser for the Philanthropic Educational Organization or PEO. PEO began in 1869, with a few enthusiastic members devoted to helping each another reach challenging educational goals. Today, they are an amazing group of nearly a quarter of a million women with a history of benevolence and involvement. PEO contributes to the betterment of women everywhere with more than a half-dozen well-funded scholarships.
Aside from this concert, the local PEO chapter, Chapter CG, are involved in several other charitable drives. Each May, they hold a special Open House at Gallery 3-2-1, and they also have a bi-annual fall Auction event with progressive hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Now, for the holiday season, they are selling gift bags of delicious pecans in rich dark/milk chocolate, gooey caramel clusters, as well as plain and cinnamon pecans --available at the Bua concert. Saturday night the 6OTS refreshment counter will also be offering a great assortment of home baked goodies made by the PEO “sisters”. In addition, there will be raffle tickets for a chance to win a "Lotto Tree,” (which is a tree full of lotto tickets). These raffle tickets can be purchased at the Bua concert as well as from PEO members in advance. Call 843-6953 or email lhoenninger@hotmail.com for a PEO member near you. A special thanks to the Hansen family for their sponsorship.
Bua tickets, available online in advance or at the door, for this outstanding musical evening are $20 per person (plus $2 online service charge) - it's for a great cause! Doors open one-hour prior to show time. For further information, call 843-OTS6 (6876) or visit 6onthesquare.org.
6 On The Square, Inc., a not-for-profit, volunteer-based, community music and arts venue, is located at 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford.
