‘Master Thieves’ nominated for Blues award; play at Blarney Stone Saturday

NORWICH – Master Thieves, a Syracuse-based band that includes two Norwich High School alumni, has been nominated for a Syracuse Area Music Award for Best Original Blues Album of 2011.
Their album, “Robbing the Blind,” is up against three other bands in the same category and will be decided at the SAMMYs at 7 p.m. on Nov. 11 at the Convention Center in the OnCenter.
Master Thieves will also be performing from 9 p.m.-1 a.m. on Saturday at the Blarney Stone Pub in downtown Norwich.
Eric Tozer and The Evening Sun’s own Brian Golden, who graduated in 1996 and ‘95 respectively, joined Master Thieves two years ago in Syracuse with founding member Charles Dorgan, Denise Shuart and Jake Alaniz, who recently took over bass guitar duties for the band.
All of the songs on the album are original compositions written by Alaniz, Dorgan, and Golden. According to Dorgan, the style is an eclectic mix of blues, jam-rock, and classic rock.
“Master Thieves is a band of friends above all else. We have fun, and we get along,” said Tozer. “I think that’s what makes us so successful.”
Tozer stated that the band’s goal was to gain a strong local following before traveling farther away. He also explained that the SAMMYS are a celebration of the Syracuse music scene and the band was honored to be nominated.
“When I saw we got nominated for best blues album, I was shocked,” said Tozer. “It feels really special for someone to say ‘Hey, you belong in this spotlight too, you’ve done something great.”
According to Dorgan, the album, which was released in June, has already sold 200-300 copies so far, although the band hopes to sell more than 500 to raise capital for the next recording process. He said they have already composed more than half of the songs for the new album and that another is definitely in the band’s future.
The album is also available on iTunes and selected songs are on Spotify.
“There’s a ton of great music in the area and everyone is working hard to make something meaningful,” said Tozer, stating his pride in being recognized for an award.
