Cris Williamson Sunday at 6 On The Square
OXFORD – 6 On The Square (6OTS) is proud to present Cris Williamson at 4 p.m. Sunday. Chris is famed for launching, what would become known as “women’s music,” music which was created, performed, and marketed specifically to women and unabashedly fused politics with sensuality and wit. On a CD release tour, all the way from the West coast, 6OTS is thrilled to bring you this headliner in its intimate setting.
Decades before indie labels were the norm, and years before women had any real access to the industry, Cris Williamson was busy changing the face of popular music. In 1975, the twenty-something former school teacher released the recording, The Changer And The Changed, on Olivia Records, which became the soundtrack of a movement. Today, that record remains one of the best-selling independent releases of all time.
“The first time I heard Cris’ music, it was like hearing honey dripped on a cello ... Cris has been a whole lot of women’s heroes -- including mine.” - Bonnie Raitt
For Cris, the music became the vehicle for something larger. Her lyrics appear on a regular basis in books and thesis papers. Her albums are part of the curriculum for women’s studies courses, and thousands of people who may not even know her name join their voices in “Song of the Soul” around campfires and places of worship. Her songs are used by doulas ushering in life and by Hospice choirs greeting death. She is sampled by hip-hop artists, and anthemed by women’s rights groups. She is often considered a treasure, passed hand-to-hand, person-to-person.
Says the Boston Phoenix, “Williamson is an heroic character whose tireless activism continues.”
For forty-some years, Cris has toured the acoustic circuit. She continues to crisscross this country, selling out Carnegie Hall three times, and headlining among others, the Newport, Kerrville, Vancouver and Moab Folk Festivals. Always the teacher, Cris facilitates Songwriting Workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Though best known for the classic Changer and the Changed, Cris celebrates her latest (and 30th) CD release, GiftHorse, a companion piece to her 2008 release Fringe, continuing the ode to her beloved West and the theme of returning home – in body, spirit and memory. The places we have left, by moving or maturing, abide in us still, and Cris takes us back to her beloved Wyoming with old songs and new originals, paying tribute to the Prairies and the People she holds so dear.
