Greene begins state playoff run Saturday
GREENE – Greene will enjoy the comfort of its home field Saturday when it hosts the first round of the state field hockey playoffs at 1 p.m. against Section II champion Shenendehowa.
The Trojans kick off the state regional finals in a Class A clash that is a rematch of last year’s regional final, one in which Greene advanced with a 2-1 victory. “They’re a good team, and I remember their goalie playing really well,” said Greene’s longtime head coach Sue Carlin. “She was young, and statistically we definitely had the advantage last year. We just couldn’t find the goal as much as we wanted.”
Just like last year, Greene (16-0) has triumphed in all of its contests, and had seldom seen the bottom side of the scoreboard. Unlike last year when Jahna Driscoll and Andrea Day served as dominant scorers, the Trojans are much more balanced with their offensive distribution. Yes, Driscoll is still a primary threat on the front line, but she has welcome assistance from Day’s replacement, Emily Gascon along with Brandee Schoonmaker, Emily Conroe, Cathy Stahl, and Emma Anderson.
“It’s not that we were selfish last year, I just think the other forwards have come along this year and are able to score more,” Carlin said.
Gascon has filled in nicely for Day bringing additional speed to the outside. Driscoll remains as a dangerous scoring threat in the middle, and Conroe, now a junior in her fourth year on varsity, operates as a shutdown player in defensive transition, and the initiator when Greene’s offense is on attack. “She’s grown tremendously in all aspects of the game,” Carlin said of Conroe. “Her knowledge of the game goes along really well with her skill.”
To prepare for Saturday’s tilt, Carlin has again enlisted the help of Maine-Endwell. For most of the last decade, the Spartans and Trojans have found themselves among the remaining three Section IV teams still playing this time of year. Each club has served as the other’s best sparring partner in preparation for a state title run. The Trojans have won two state titles in Carlin’s tenure, and M-E has multiple state titles as well over the past 10 years.
“The scrimmages have worked out well for us,” Carlin said. “At this point of the season, we need to continue to be challenged by somebody besides ourselves. (Maine-Endwell) has been accomodating to us.”
Winners of Saturday’s state regional finals advance to the state semifinals and finals set for Nov. 18-19 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
