History of Ballroom Dance exhibit opens at Rexford Street museum

NORWICH – On Nov. 10, the Chenango County Historical Society, located at 45 Rexford Street in the city of Norwich, officially opened an exhibit by the Norwich Dance Club titled “The History of Ballroom Dance in Chenango County.” Opening the exhibit were Chair of the Chenango County Historical Society Linda Green, Director of the Historical Society Alan Estus and founder of the Norwich Dance Club Martha Ryan.
The exhibit has been dedicated to the memory of the late Bob Arnell, co-founder and original catalyst of the Norwich Dance Club. Arnell formed and was Director of the Big Band the Chenangoans. It was through his good graces and benevolence that the Norwich Dance Club was able to be created and prosper. Tedi Arnell, wife and partner of Bob Arnell, was in attendance and served as the official ribbon-cutter of the opening ceremonies.
The exhibit features a collection of retro-images of ballroom dancing. Town of Norwich Historian David Graham completed a composite of research that traces the history of Ballroom Dance in Chenango county. There are replicas of ballroom dance attire throughout the years titled “ Fashion Through the Decades.” Included is a pictorial and written celebration of local ballroom stars, both past and present, including Burr Harrington, Marv Mackoff, Wilma Mackoff, and Red Raville.
Chair of the Board Linda Green commented, “We are so pleased to have the Norwich Dance Club at the museum. We welcome this unique exhibit and invite everyone to come visit.” Green reminded visitors that the exhibit would remain open until April of 2012. Martha Ryan, co-founder of the Norwich Dance Club, welcomed all visitors and thanked all partners and volunteers for making the exhibit possible, “This exhibit is the result of hard work by many volunteers. This new partnership with the Chenango Historical Society has helped us share our passion for ballroom dancing further.” Ryan also commented that the effort was made possible thanks to the support of the RC Smith Foundation.
The Norwich Dance Club will be holding its annual charity ball on Nov. 16 at their ballroom located at 17 South Broad Street in Norwich. Ryan invited the community to join them and to bring winter clothing donations. “We are a community group united by our passion for ballroom dancing and also committed to support our community. We invite everyone to join us for a night of live ballroom music, refreshments and great old-fashioned camaraderie and to help us support one of the many community endeavors we care so much about.”
The Norwich Dance Club is a community group founded in 2003 to learn and celebrate the art of Ballroom Dance.
