Capitol Steps perform in Hamilton this weekend
HAMILTON – On Saturday, the Capitol Steps once again puts the “mock” in democracy with an 8 p.m. performance at the Palace Theater in Hamilton. The doors will open at 7 p.m. for a relaxed social hour with a cash bar by Rusch’s. Seating is general admission and there are only few seats left for $35 each. After the show, the audience is welcome to meet the cast for autographs and photos.
Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. The group started in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party. Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom “Don’t quit your day job!”, and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.
“They’re the best. There’s no one like them, no one in their league.” Says Larry King, CNN.
They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide. Since they began, Capitol Steps has recorded over 30 albums, including its latest, Desperate Housemembers and Barackin’ Around the Christmas Tree. CD’s will be available for sale and autographing.
“The Capitol Steps make it easier to leave public life.” — Former President George H. W. Bush.
WRVO, NPR’s local affiliate, will be recording the show for rebroadcast at a later date, so audience members can listen to themselves and enjoy the show twice. The Palace Theater is excited to partner with WRVO to share this broadcast with other NPR stations around New York including WAMC (Albany), WXXI (Rochester), and WNED (Buffalo).
The Palace Theater is proud to continue its 5th season with the Broadway musical Girls Night: the Musical Feb. 18, The Palace Players Productions of The Odd Couple, March 9 and 10, and 12 Angry Men, April 27 and 28.
The Palace Theater would like to thank its main sponsors for their support: Banfi Vintner’s Foundation, Bruce Stewart DDS, Alternative Hypnosis, WRVO, Bruce Ward Architects, Colgate Bookstore, Colgate Inn, Hamilton Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, The McNeiece Foundation, WMCR, Crowe’s Drug Store, and NBT.
