Soccer center accepting sign-ups for winter leagues

NORWICH – The Norwich indoor soccer center is officially open and sign-ups are under way for winter leagues.
The center, run by the Chenango Soccer Club, is a non-for-profit organization currently operated by the Dee Osterhout family that volunteers time and effort to keep the center operational during the winter months.
“This is one of the few organized sports available in the region that focuses not only on youth-aged events, but also on older teens and adults who want to be part of an organized league,” Osterhout said.
The soccer center, located behind Chenango County Council of the Arts building on West Main Street, houses not only a 1,500-foot soccer playing field, but it also has areas to play frisbee, dodgeball, coin-operated machines, and a large area for parties.
“The center is more than a soccer arena, it’s a safe place where children and adults can come have a good time, get some exercise, and spend time with friends and family,” Osterhout said.
Osterhout said teams consist of 5-versus-5 (four players and a keeper) with a maximum of seven players per team. Individuals can sign up as a team or be placed on a “house team” at a cost of $75 per player. The fee covers one session including 12 games. All teams can be co-ed, and Osterhout is currently trying to put together youth, teen, and adult leagues.
“I would like to host the first teen games Dec. 10th and 11th. There will be 12 games lasting 40 minutes apiece,” Osterhout said. “First place in each division will receive individual trophies, and there will be cold drinks and snacks available for purchase at the front counter.”
In addition to the leagues, the Norwich Soccer Center is open every Friday evening. From 4 to 6 p.m. Children under age 12 are invited to “open play,” at no cost. Teens and adults are invited to play from 6 to 8 p.m. for a $5 fee per player. Osterhout said that starting this season he hopes to have the center open on Saturdays for both the free children's play and the teen and adult practice times.
For more information about the center or how to sign up, call Dee Osterhout at 607-336-6948 or visit the soccer center located at 27 West Main Street.
