YMCA reaches out in annual support campaign

NORWICH – Aspiring to secure the vision of building strong kids, families and communities, the Norwich Family YMCA recently brought its annual support campaign into full swing, reaching out to the community for help.
While the YMCA seeks community support throughout the year, this is the “the end of the year call for help,” said Jamey Mullen, executive director. “It’s really an attempt to reach out to our community to support what we do.”
With 3,500 brochures mailed out earlier this month, the organization aims to spread the message that it is a valued charity in the community and provides the support needed for a healthy mind, body and spirit, according to Mullen. This, he said, is the underlying purpose of the campaign.
“These contributions allow us to keep the doors open to local families who need the Y,” Mullen said. “Whatever support we get directly supports the YMCA mission in providing access to the facility and its programs.”
Last year, the Y raised nearly $68,000 in local contributions; this amount, said Mullen, is crucial in keeping the facility available for those who struggle to pay for membership fees and rely on the organization’s Open Doors Scholarship Program, along with other scholarships, childcare and unemployment benefits. “The need is there ... for anyone who struggles, we can find a way to make it work; we’ll do what we need to do.”
Though the support campaign gives the YMCA the desperately needed funding to carry out its objectives, Mullen explained, the amount given out by the Y in the past has far exceeded the financial support it receives. Nearly 750 members were granted a total of more than $88,611 in 2009 for assistance in childcare, membership and special programs at the Y. In 2010, the amount allocated jumped to more than $121,000 for the provision of the same services, benefiting nearly 880 members – a significant increase over the course of a year, Mullen said.
“Wouldn’t it be unfortunate to deny some area residents the opportunity to participate because they did not have the money to become members?” asked this year’s Family YMCA Honorary Chairperson Frank Benenati. “Subsidizing memberships for needy families and children is more than the YMCA can manage in this economic climate,” he said. “Our mission statement is to make our facilities and programs available to all.”
