Tornado matmen picking up momentum

Norwich 52, Susquehanna Valley 29
NORWICH – Norwich continued the momentum of its strong finish at last weekend’s Owego Duals flattening Susquehanna Valley Wednesday night at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
“This was exactly the way we wrestled our last six matches down at Owego last weekend,” said Norwich coach Joe Downey. “It seems like everything is clicking, and we’re wrestling very well right now.”
Anthony Vitello (170) set the tone for Norwich’s night in the opening match. Wrestling up a weight class, he dominated the Sabers’ Austin Darling, 14-2. Darling came into the match with nine wins in 12 bouts. Later on in what Downey felt was a swing match, Trey Muserallo (106) pulled out an exciting pinfall win over Derek Richards. Muserallo was nearly pinned early in the third period, but executed a late reversal that he turned into a pin.
Josh Myers (132) won his first home match for Norwich taking a 10-3 decision over Liam Axton, and John Marvin rallied to beat the Sabers’ John Yezzi in the 145-pound tilt. Yezzi had two wins over Marvin last year, and was well on his way to another victory. Marvin, down 7-3, executed a takedown with 30 seconds left that he turned into a headlock for a five-point maneuver that gave him the 8-7 victory.
“We started slow to the season, but we’re clicking now,” Downey said. “We have a real good one coming up with Sherburne-Earlville.”
Norwich (7-5) hosts S-E Friday at 11 a.m.
