Afton, Morrisville team for adult ed program
AFTON – The Afton Central School Adult Education program and SUNY Morrisville will conduct a 16-week instructional course for adults ages 21 and older at the Norwich campus.
The E3 program, which stands for education, exploration and employment, will focus on developing the knowledge and skills needed to receive a GED as well as college and workforce preparation.
Also known as GRASP, the Giving Ready Adults a Study Program is designed to prepare adults for either college or the workforce.
Students must be 21 or older without a high school diploma or an equivalent, such as a GED.
“Our goal is to help adults with a lack of reading skills get the training they need to go to college and hit the ground running instead of being forced to take remedial math and language,” said June White, director of the Afton Adult Education program.
White stressed the fact that many students enter college without the proper tools to study and absorb information at that level. The E3 classes will not only teach courses in algebra, pre-algebra, advanced writing, technology and work place readiness skills. They will also focus on time management and preparing students for the college experience.
“Often times students will go to college unprepared and will not seek help,” said White. “As a result we see many students dropping out ... they don’t get credit for the class and often forfeit their grant or scholarship money.”
The program will be taught by Bridgete Hine, a NYS certified instructor, and registration will be on Jan. 14. Prospective students will have to take an evaluation on site which ascertains a preliminary understanding of their skill level.
For more information or to register for the program, contact White at 639-2811.
