Norwich hosts Saints tonight

NORWICH – Norwich had three days to enjoy its Stop DWI title. Tonight, it’s back to the grind of league play for the Tornado (6-1) as they host Seton Catholic Central at Jack Jones Gymnasium.
The Saints are coming off three losses in the national division of the DWI tourney, but entered the tournament with five straight wins over Southern Tier Athletic Conference foes by an average of 26.4 points per game. Of those five victories, only Oneonta (46) eclipsed the 40-point mark.
“To me, Binghamton and Seton Catholic Central are the two best teams in the league,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “We’re looking forward to it and it should be a good test for us.”
Tommy Torto, a four-year starter for Seton, leads his team in scoring at just over 15 points per game. Torto has an inside-outside game in which he is a threat to shoot the three, but also take the ball hard to the basket.
Torto and 6-foot-7 senior, Cole Smothers, are the lone Saints players averaging in double figures, and Smothers presents a huge matchup problem for the Purple. “Smothers does a great job of sealing on the low block, and they want to pound it into him every chance they get,” Collier said.
John Armstrong is a third-year guard for SCC, John Martin moved from a reserve to a starter at guard, and Jarell Reagan, a 6-foot-3 forward, is most adept at feeding Smothers using a high-post entry pass.
“Seton likes to play a similar style to us,” Collier. “We’ll use the same game plan we have been using: We’ll play full-court man, and try to dictate tempo and pace. But that is what Seton does, too.
“Seton plays great team defense, but they do have some weaknesses we’ll try to attack. We hope to mix it up, change defenses, and get some guys in there to gain more experience.”
Norwich has three players in double figures through the first seven games. Seth Thomsen is averaging 15.4 points per game, Kyle Edwards 14.6, and Dennis Oralls is at 11.9. All three are coming off strong performances at the DWI tourney in which they were named to the Regional Division Two all-tournament team.
