YMCA Fun Club hosts winter carnival
NORWICH – With a new year comes new events for the Fun Club at the Norwich Family YMCA. After more than a week off from school for holiday recess, Fun Club kids are already getting excited for their next day off, when the YMCA hosts a Carnival Day.
When schools plan to close, the YMCA Fun Club is in full swing for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The Fun Club Carnival Day will be from 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 16, when schools close in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day promises to be “oodles of fun,” said Bonnie Tiffany, youth and family director at the Y. “And it’s going to be a great alternative for kids to enjoy their time away from school.”
“We always have a theme and I try to pick a theme that the children will enjoy ... Kids will get to implement their own games, designing their own games in the morning and playing them in the afternoon,” explained Tiffany. “Each game is going to have some really cool prizes. It’s going to be a whole day of fun-filled activities.”
Already, Tiffany has Carnival Day games prepared to make it an enjoyable event. Children can look forward to playing duck pond and guess my age while they snack on hot dogs, sno cones and popcorn or take part in the planned cookie walk. Of course, kids will will also be able to decorate their cheeks with face painting – another custom that no carnival would be complete without. Adding to the fun, Razzles the Clown – the star of the show – will be teaching kids the “how to” of balloon animal making throughout the day.
Children who attend are also encouraged to bring a bathing suit, towel, and a bag lunch, Tiffany said.
The Fun Club didn’t see the turnout anticipated over the schools’ holiday recess when it had fun events scheduled for children all week, said Tiffany. She said she’s hoping to see more parents and children take advantage of the upcoming carnival.
