Norwich 79, Chenango Valley 67
CHENANGO BRIDGE – A bit of adversity in the fourth quarter ignited the Tornado, who came away with their second win over Chenango Valley this season Wednesday evening.
Norwich was whistled for an intentional foul and technical foul in succession after CV forward Robert Heller was fouled on a strong drive to the basket. Heller left the game due to injury, yet the Warriors were able to sink four straight foul shots to trim Norwich’s comfortable lead to seven. “I really think the intentional foul and technical foul was a big turning point for us,” said Norwich coach Tom Collier. “We were able to get a defensive stop, and went on a run to end the game. We weathered their comeback.”
Norwich junior Kyle Edwards pumped in one of his six three balls to raise the lead back to 10, and senior Dennis Oralls iced the victory from the foul line. Oralls was consistently fouled on drives to the basket, and made 10 of 12 charity tosses to finish with 25 points. Edwards had 23, and Seth Thomsen came through with 15 as the Tornado power trio accounted for 63 of their team’s points. Sophomore Michael Sutton bounced back from a scoreless game Monday night to net 10 points.
“Chenango Valley came out hard against us, even harder than they did when we played them at the Arena (In the DWI finals),” Collier said. “We were able to match their intensity, and actually exceed it.”
The win for Norwich was its ninth this season in 11 games, and propelled the Tornado to their third victory in six days. “This was an important win against a good Class B school, and we’re in Class B,” Collier said. “After losing to Seton (Catholic), we wanted to win these three games, and we were able to do that.”
Oralls has scored 53 points over his last two games, and he added 10 rebounds Wednesday to lead the Tornado.
