NORWICH – A Time Warner truck erupted in flames on Maple Street in Norwich Wednesday, due to an undetermined problem in the engine compartment.
According to Norwich Fire Chief Tracy Chawgo, the call came into the station at 10:19 a.m. and engines were dispatched to the scene.
“We were able to put the fire out very quickly,” said Chawgo, who estimated it only took 10 minutes to get the blaze under control. “The problem was removing the truck from the scene.”
At the time of the fire, the boom on the back of the truck, which is used to raise and lower personnel up to three stories off the ground, had been extended in order for cable company employees to perform an installation on the Norwich Center building, located at the corner of Maple and West Main streets.
The truck was parked against the building immediately in front of the west-facing entrance with a worker inside the boom’s basket.
Two other Time Warner employees were on site at the time and immediately rushed to the second story of the building, forcing a window open, and allowing the third to exit the basket, reported Chawgo.
There were no injuries and the only damage was done to the truck itself. Some debris had fallen on nearby cars, but was immediately washed away by the fire department.
According to Chawgo, it took until nearly noon to lower the boom with help from Time Warner and A& J towing. Eventually, the boom was manipulated with a jumper and battery pack and the truck was removed from the scene.
Chawgo has asked that anyone with photos or videos of the blaze share them with the Norwich Fire Dept. to help with their investigation into the cause of the fire. They may be submitted by contacting Chawgo directly at 334-3411.
