Frontier closing payment office

NORWICH – Frontier Communications will close the doors of its customer service center on East Park Place the first week in February.
The payment office staffs two full-time employees. They are the only Frontier employees who will be affected by the close, according to Frontier General Manager in Chenango Claudia Maroney.
The decision to close the customer service center, where walk-in customers go to pay their phone bills and make adjustments to their accounts in person, was carefully deliberated among company executives, taking into account the concerns and demands of Frontier customers, said Jim Currie, vice president of operations for Frontier’s northeast regions. Frontier will continue to maintain its administrative offices in the building upstairs and its technical service center downstairs. Customer notifications of the change will be sent out in the mail in a few days.
“We just can’t keep it open any longer,” said Currie as he explained the financial pinch that the center puts on the company.
“We understand that some people like to come in to pay their bills,” said Currie. Frontier is trying to accommodate the concerns of those customers, he added, by keeping a deposit box outside the center and ] boosting its online bill paying system for customer convenience.
An increase in customer demand for online services has recently led to a decrease in traffic at the service center and ultimately became the primary reason to close, Currie said. The online bill paying method is a convenient asset for customer service, he said. Frontier rolled out a new online bill paying system earlier this year and maintains that closing the Norwich payment office will not impact their overall service.
One of these employees, who has been with Frontier since the customer service center opened in March 2001, is taking advantage of the retirement incentives offered by the company. The other, explained Maroney, will be promoted to an open position in the company’s administration office in the same building.
“He’s taking advantage of this opportunity to enhance his career path,” said Maroney, adding that his new place will be in an office adjacent to her own. “It’s really good news for both of them,” she said.
Frontier Communications has become a staple in the community as one of the county’s leading employers, staffing more than 400 people Chenango County alone.
“We continually assess our operations to achieve greater efficiency and will continue to be a full service communications company,” Maroney stated.
