City to move ahead with pool repairs

NORWICH – The Common Council announced Tuesday that it would move forward with renovations at the Kurt Beyer Pool.
The decision follows a $40,000 donation from the Greater Norwich Foundation. The only other funding will come from city reserves and the council agreed to take a loan for nearly $70,000 to pay for the remainder of the project. The council is currently discussing ways in which the loan will be repaid, which includes possible membership or one time user fees this summer.
“We’re very happy to be moving forward with the project,” said Mayor Joseph Maiurano. “But there’s still a lot of work to do.”
According to Kurt Beyer Pool community fundraiser organizer Jackie Glen, the fundraiser set for 10 a.m. at the Norwich Fire Station on April 21 is still on. However, rather than earmarking donations for pool repairs, funds will go toward other Kurt Beyer resources. She added the Kurt Beyer Pool community Facebook page will continue to be updated periodically.
