Gathering the resolve

The process of putting together Progress Chenango is over (well, not for you, the reader, you still have to get out there and read it) and today’s blog can provide a little insight into my favorite parts.
However, the problem I must now address in my column is, what comes next?
It seemed like the everything leading up to Progress was just that: leading up to Progress. My first six months at The Evening Sun seemed to be a series of escalating challenges pushing me towards the end of the year.
During my second month, I tackled the Chenango County Fair and the New Berlin Youth Days. In my fourth month, I hit the phones for election season. And finally, in the sixth, it was time to see what I could do with Progress.
As stated above, I will elaborate on my adventures over the last month and a half in my blog, but now to the future.
Have you made your New Year’s Resolution yet? I haven’t, and it certainly isn’t because I don’t have anything I’d like to improve about myself.
Personally, I’ve always felt that this whole resolution thing is just an exercise in futility. I’m sure there are a few people out there who make a promise to themselves and stick to it, but a majority of people make these grandiose schemes to lose 100 pounds, quit smoking, stop stealing cats, etc. and after a month their buying another cheeseburger/pack o’ smokes or stalking back alleys with a net and a can of tuna.
I say if you’re going to make a New Year’s Resolution, keep it simple. I have a friend who just wants to stop throwing cigarette butts on the ground. He knows he’s not going to quit smoking, but at least he can keep his yard clean.
Personally, I have plenty of goals this year. I’d like to hit the gym, be more organized, start saving more money each month, etc., and I plan on working on all of these things, but I’m not going to put all my effort into one of these things just to find myself slowly making excuses each week as to why I don’t have to go to the gym every day, or put that much of my pay check into the bank.
Instead, I’m simply going to try and make decisions that I can be proud of. The truth is, sometimes I don’t want to go to the gym and sometimes I want a little extra leisure money in my pocket, but if stay conscious of my habits and who I’m affecting with my actions, I know I’ll be doing the right thing.
And the cat thing, I’m going to work on that too.
