Norwich rally falls shy

Johnson City 63, Norwich 59
JOHNSON CITY – Norwich’s “hack-a-Shaq” ploy in the fourth quarter almost worked.
Fouling the Wildcats’ players at every turn in the final quarter, Norwich parlayed the Wildcats’ endless stream of missed free throws into a furious comeback that left it just a few points shy.
Seth Thomsen scored 12 in the last quarter, Eric Walling had eight, and Dennis Oralls six to nearly erase JC’s 26-point lead late in the third and 21-point advantage to start the fourth. Walling had a look a three ball in the final minute that would have tied the game, but was off the mark, said Norwich coach Tom Collier.
“It was an unbelievable fourth quarter,” Collier said. “Everyone on the bench was jumping up and down, and we had guys diving all over the court. All 11 guys we played contributed.”
That comeback was not enough to offset nearly three quarters of Johnson City dominance. Isaiah Washington scored nine in the opening quarter, and Ryan Clark had 12 of his 20 points in the second half lifting Johnson City to a 16-point lead at the half and 50-29 edge heading to the fourth.
“Our effort in the first half was okay, but it needs to be exemplary,” Collier said. “We found out how hard we can play in the second half, but we just didn’t play hard enough in the first half.”
Thomsen scored 17 to lead Norwich, Oralls had 13, and Walling, in his most significant minutes of the season, scored 13 points off the bench. The loss was the second straight for NHS, who drop into second place in the STAC Central division behind co-leaders JC and Susquehanna Valley. “Mathematically, I don’t know if we can win the division,” Collier said. “It’s disappointing to lose two games in a row, but our goal remains the same: To win the Class B title.”
Norwich plays at Elmira tonight in a non-division game.

“We just didn’t play well in the second and third quarters,” Osborne said. “We focused on Adams (Sam) because he’s their big guy, but Carlin and Treadwell stepped up and made shots. Greene also picked up its defensive intensity, and forced us into a lot of turnovers and bad shots.”

Ryan Porter had 15 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots for the Bobcats. Guard Brooks Harmon also had a double-double scoring 13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. “We played very good defense throughout the game, and some really good offense in the first half,” said B-G coach Greg Warren. “We got a little flat and tight on offense about midway through the third quarter, but we continued to play good defense.”
The Bobcats (8-5) won the rebounding battle, and perhaps rekindled interest in this local rivalry that has been decidedly in the Warriors’ favor for many years. “I haven’t seen that many people in our gym since I’ve been here,” Warren said. “It was standing-room-only.”

Norwich 53, Johnson City 39
NORWICH – On senior recognition night, Norwich turned back an improved Johnson City club connecting for 10 free throws in the final period – and 23 for the game – in Friday’s STAC Central Division win.
Bryn Loomis scored 16 points to lead three NHS players in double figures. Jenni Borfitz and Hailey Dietrich each added 12. Norwich gained control of the contest in the middle two periods, that after the Wildcats got off to a surprising start, and led 13-12 after one period.
“Johnson City was improved, and we needed to do the little things better,” said Norwich coach Josh Bennett. “We need to close out on shooters better on defense and rebound. We’ll get there, and we’ll be ready for Owego (next week).”
Down by a point at the first turn, Norwich whipped off a 16-3 run in the second stanza that prompted a pair of Wildcats timeouts. Borfitz and Dietrich had five points apiece in during the run, and Loomis scored four.
Norwich had just five field goals in the second half, but was able to extend its 28-18 lead. In the final quarter, Borfitz was 5-for-6 from the free throw line, and Loomis made three out of four.
The five seniors NHS recognized – all of whom started the game – were Miranda Costin, Loomis, Dietrich, Sophie Stewart, and Shannon McGrath. McGrath, who has missed the last two seasons due to injury, suited up for the first time in her career, and received the ceremonial opening tip from Dietrich in a prearranged gesture of sportsmanship by Bennett and JC head coach, Jeff Smith.

Taylor Davis was nearly a one-person offensive show for the Storm in the first half scoring 16 of her team’s points. An early run in the second half moved the game out of reach. “We were pressing in the third quarter, and that really turned it up for us,” Backus said. “We had a bunch of steals in a row.”
