City ice rink vandalized

NORWICH – On top of this year’s warmer temperatures and unfavorable weather for the ice rink, acts of vandalism forced it to remain closed Monday, even though colder temperatures would have allowed it to open for only the seventh day this season.
Director of the Norwich City Youth Bureau Robert Mason reported that on Saturday afternoon, ice was smashed at the skating rink and parts of the chain link fence surrounding it had been dismantled and thrown on the ice.
“It’s really very disappointing ... A lot of hard work goes into maintaining the facility and this just sets us back,” said Mason.
Damage done to the ice froze, leaving pieces of the broken fence and mounds of ice too dangerous to skate on frozen to the surface; however, Mason hopes that with 40 degree days in this week’s weather forecast, ice will melt, making it easier to smooth over rough spots and the skating rink can open again when temperatures fall below freezing.
In the six days that it’s been open this year, 520 skaters have used the rink, Mason said. “Most kids that use it are appreciative and well behaved,” he added. “There is no reason for what happened ... It’s too bad because this just ruins it for everyone else.”
