FBI, federal court system issue warning on fast-spreading jury duty scam
NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday confirmed a nationwide warning issued by the FBI and federal court system concerning a jury duty scam that authorities say is spreading quickly.
The scam – which involves a telephone call from a supposed jury duty coordinator – is particularly insidious because the caller is said to be using intimidation over the phone in an attempt to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.
Those who protest they never received a summons for jury duty are asked for their Social Security number and date of birth so that the caller can allegedly verify the information and cancel a court-issued arrest warrant.
