NHS senior, Raiders hockey fan and team manager the inspiration for autism awareness at Colgate

HAMILTON – The Colgate University Women’s Hockey team will host its second annual Light Up Starr Rink Blue event – which kicks off the team’s Autism Awareness Project – during its home game versus Union at 7 tonight.
Inspired by Norwich High School senior Kati Williams – a die-hard fan and team manager for the Raiders – the project aims to raise autism awareness and benefits Autism Speaks of Central New York, the Family Resource Network, The Kelberman Center, Project Oz and the American Special Hockey Association.
In 2011, the Raiders raised more than $18,000 toward their chosen charities. This year, the goal is to nearly double that amount, raising at least $30,000.
“We are really excited to kick-off our 2012 Autism Awareness Project and are hoping to build on the success we had in 2011,” said Raiders Head Coach Scott Wiley. “Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. in which there is no cure or medical detection.”
The goal of the project, added Wiley, remains the same: continue to raise awareness, educate Colgate and surrounding communities about autism and raise funds to assist local and national agencies that support people and families that are managing autism.
Williams – who was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome in 2005 – has been an avid fan of the Colgate Women’s Hockey team for more than five years now, and has served as a team manager for the past three years.
The Colgate Women’s Hockey Team will take on Union tonight and Rensselaer on Saturday at 4 p.m. Any fan wearing light blue – the color which represents autism – to tonight’s game will get in for free. The first 300 fans to arrive will receive a free light blue T-shirt, designed specifically for the event. This year, the team will sport special, autism awareness jerseys, designed by 11-year old Christian Mast, which will be unveiled prior to tonight’s game.
