Afton school evacuated after small fire breaks out
AFTON – Students and staff at Afton Central School were dismissed early Monday after a small fire broke out on the roof of the building and spread to an adjacent wall.
The fire – which was first reported at approximately 12:23 p.m. – caused smoke damage to an outer wall of the school’s auditorium and no major damage to the structure itself, according to Chenango County Emergency Management Director Matt Beckwith. There were no injuries, he added.
The Afton and Bainbridge Fire Departments responded to the fire, with additional assistance provided by the Harpursville Fire Department.
Crews took approximately an hour and a half to two hours to get the fire under control.
