Norwich's new barber has old-time flair

NORWICH – Those in need of a little off the top have one more option now that the Cutting Edge Barber Shop on 4 West Park Place has opened for business.
Cutting Edge owner and barber Danielle Monro said she now has the job she’s always wanted. Two years after earning her certification in the field of cosmetology and aesthetics through the DCMO BOCES Cosmetology Program, Monro said she’s excited about her first business venture and the satisfaction of realizing a life-long dream.
“I’m really hoping that this eventually takes off,” said the 22-year-old entrepreneur, recalling the excitement and slight hesitation she initially had in opening her own shop. “I’m a little nervous. All I wanted to do since I was little is to cut hair.”
Wrapping up only her second week in business, Monro said she hopes to gain more clients and see her business grow further down the road. She’s already seen a steady stream of customers and with the start of local advertising late last week, she said she feels well on her way to following through with her goal.
What makes her small shop unique, said Monro, is the integration of her second love: Cars and trucks. Everything in her shop is tailored to reflect her interests and personality, she said, from side tables crafted from painted wheel rims, to the vintage license plates that decorate the walls. It’s what she hopes will separate her from the local competition.
Monro remembered stories of her grandfather visiting his hometown barber every Saturday and explained that she wanted to carry on that same kind of heritage with her own shop. “I wanted to keep a traditional look ... I think that even the brick walls give it character,” said Monro, citing the conventional appeal of her shop. She went on to say that this sense of tradition and unique feel is only one reason she chose not to open a conventional salon. Her aim, she said, is to keep that tradition alive.
Cutting Edge Barber Shop is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, closed Tuesday and opens again from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. Appointments and walk-ins are both available. For more information about Cutting Edge, call Monro at 373-5252.
