Tireless defense lifts G-MU past OV

G-MU 36, Otselic Valley 28
SOUTH OTSELIC – G-MU’s defense is indeed tireless.
The Raiders, playing on back-to-back nights, again held the opposition under 30 points, and the 28 points was 11 less than the Vikings’ previous low.
“They opened the game real well, and seemed to hit every shot,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We just couldn’t do anything on offense in the first half. We had trouble just getting shots, and our low production (on offense) was because of them.”
DeMario Reed scored eight in the first quarter and Eddie Ray Cotton had seven as the Raiders took a 17-4 lead after eight minutes.
OV closed a 16-point halftime deficit to four points behind 10 points from Gideon Schena as it adjusted to G-MU’s tough man-to-man defense. “We just couldn’t get any closer,” Loomis said of his team’s comeback. “G-MU is a real good team. Their players are quick and defend well.”
Reed led G-MU (11-6) with 15 points, and Cotton wound up with 11.
Schena paced the Vikings scoring 13 points.
OV plays at Cincinnatus Friday evening in a key Central Counties League division game. If the Vikes earn the win, they will force a three-way tie for first place with Cincy and McGraw.

Sidney forged its comeback in the third quarter cutting Greene’s lead from 14 to six points. “We just played poorly at both ends of the court,” Gorton said of the third quarter. “We had some fast-break opportunities where we didn’t even get a shot, and we didn’t get back defensively.”
